The Fourth of
July is fast approaching and we need to make sure to consider our pet’s safety.
The sudden noise of fireworks leads
many dogs (and cats and even wildlife) to perceive those noises as a life
or death threat. This triggers their fight-or-flight response. Your dog may
bark at the noises or try to run away and hide. He may show other signs of
anxiety, too, like restlessness, panting, pacing and whining.
There are things we can do to try to make
the day, and in many cases the days before and after, less stressful for our
pets. One of the best things you can do for your dog is get them out and
exercise during the day in hopes of tiring them out. You should always make
sure that your pets wear a collar with an ID tag. If they have a microchip make
sure that information is accurate. The fifth of July is one of the busiest days
for lost and injured pets in shelters, animal control facilities and emergency
hospitals. Even if you do not think that
your dog or cat will bolt out of an open door or get out of the yard, they
could if they are frightened and do not know what else to do. With that in mind, if your dog needs to go
outside after dark when fireworks are likely to happen, even if you are in a
fenced secure area, It is a good idea to take them out on a leash.
We have some anti-anxiety products on the
market that will also aid in calming your pet. These non-pharmaceutical
products are nice to use (versus drugs) as some of the drugs can actually
increase anxiety because the pet still feels frightened but cannot physically do
anything about it. There are herbal
combinations, homeopathic remedies, and flower essences that are all great
calming agents. Thundershirts are
another option. These tight stretchy
“shirts” act to calm much like “swaddling “a baby. CBD is another newer option for many
ailments, including fear and anxiety. CBD products come in oils, treats, and
even topical applications. Please give
us a call or stop by to see which options may be best for you and your
pets. These suggestions are also helpful
with thunderstorm anxiety.
